Guitar tuning is now much more comfortable than before. Musicians from the early 90s used to tune their guitar by using their ears. After 1995, the concept of ear training has changed. Artists are now prone to hit the accuracy rather than the assumption.
So, it has seen that the procedure of guitar tuning has changed, but one thing yet not changed. What is that? How to tune a guitar? The guitar might be electric or acoustic. Newbie guitarist still wants to know the tuning procedure.
In this short writing, I will show how to tune an electric guitar? Later, there will be some tips to improve your ear training. These guides will help you to train up your listening skills far better than you thought.
Why is a tuner necessary?
Before starting my tuner lesson, let me give you a quick review of the importance of guitar tuner. Guitar tuners work to adjust the frequencies. The reason behind changing the frequencies is to combine the pitch of other instruments.
For example, your D string might not sound the same as the D string of your bassist. Therefore it’s clear that you have to make the guitar frequency as equal as the rest of the instruments. This is the importance of a guitar tuner.
Types of guitar tuners:
Now, the next thing is about the kind of guitar tuners. I tested four different kinds of an electric guitar tuner. And they are chromatic, polyphonic, strobe and microphone. Among the four categories, I prefer the chromatic and strobe guitar tuners.
These tuners show the accurate result you need. The artificial intelligence of these tuners not only understands the frequency but also analyzes the range of your string notes. So, if you are a beginner, then consider my recommendation, at least.
How to tune an electric guitar with the tuner:
I hope now you know the basics of a guitar tuner. So, it’s time to learn how to optimize the electric guitar. To determine the art of tuning with tuner, I will recommend using a clip-on tuner or pedal tuner. If you are ready with your tuner, then let’s learn some standard tuning methods first.
This is also called the EBGDAE sequence. Worldwide, there is a standard of this tuning, which is (440HZ). To keep your guitar strings in this tune, you have to start the process from the first string.
The first string will be E4. The second string will be B3; the next strings will be G3, D3, A2, and E2. These are the sequences of standard tuning. Your tuner will show the notes when you turn the guitar knobs.
It’s an easy process. I have attached a picture below for your convenience. Since this article is one kind of lesson, let me share a piece of valuable information about standard tuning. And that is, remember, E minor scale is the root of conventional tuning.
If you look one the scale, then there are all notes of E minor pentatonic scales. It means you can apply your music theory to create open chords from G major scale. By the way, E minor is the relative minor of G major scale.
Like the standard tune, DADGAD is another sweet and romantic melody. This stage will teach you how to make a DADGAD tune. So, the process of making a DADGAD tune is quite easy as the standard tune.
In this case, you need to change some knobs position. For instance, you will change the sixth, second, and first string. These three strings will be as follows; the sixth string will be D instead of E, the second string will be A instead of B, and the first string will be D rather than E.
Basically, DADGAD is used to create some large level compositions. I have seen many famous guitarists use this tune, and Mark Tremonti is one of them.
Now, what lessons do the previous methods give?
It does not mean you have to follow a standard tuning method always. If you know the chemistry of musical notes, then the guitar tune is your slave. This is what I believe; I have a signature guitar tuning method. Even the string notes are based on my choice. Thus, the suggestion is; learn the magic of notes, and then you can play with the tune.
